CHEMISTRY, MATERIALS and BIOTECHNOLOGY
An environmental biotechnology technician is familiar with materials and has mastered the procedures
for chemical and biological analysis. He or she efficiently combines the skills and knowledge of fields like
chemistry, biology, microbiology and knows how to prevent and manage situations that can endanger the
Students completing their studies in environmental biotechnologies can enroll in university courses at
any faculty, especially scientific, technical and medical ones.
At the same time, students attain sufficient specific technical knowledge to enable them to find
employment straight away in companies dealing with chemical analysis, quality control, managing
chemical and biotechnological processes and protection of the environment.
At the Jožef Stefan High School Biotechnology Section, the standard programme is enhanced with
frequent extracurricular activities in collaboration with nearby institutions, such as the University of
Trieste, the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), the National
Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS) and others. Students are involved in
international and cross-border exchanges with schools with similar specialties.
The standard school programme has regular lab activities and is complemented by work experiences in
nearby research centres and in biotech companies.
